A Disney Legend Died at the Age of 95

Known for writing songs for movies including “Mary Poppins,” Richard M. Sherman passed away on Saturday at the age of 95 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Gluck, and their three children, Gregory, Victoria, and Lynda.

Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City, California, will host a funeral service on May 31.

Two Oscars and three Grammy Awards were among the many honors that Sherman and his brother Robert B. Sherman received. “Richard Sherman was the epitome of what it means to be a Disney Legend,” stated Disney CEO Bob Iger.

Film historian Leonard Maltin emphasized the Sherman brothers’ positive approach, saying, “Their music had an upbeat outlook that spilled over into Richard’s life,” while Pixar’s Pete Docter commended Sherman’s “infectious joy for life.”

Throughout his career, Sherman composed music for films such as “Mary Poppins,” “The Jungle Book,” and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.” The Sherman brothers were recognized Disney Legends in 1990 and inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005.
