Darci Lynne puts her own spin on a timeless classic, infusing opera into the song and taking her performance to a whole new level

Darci Lynne is getting in the spirit ahead of Wicked’s release. The America’s Got Talent singer/ventriloquist shared a video of her singing “Popular” as her puppet, Petunia. For those who may not know, the film, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo premieres later this month, on November 22.

Petunia is the Ultimate Glinda in Darci Lynne Wicked Cover

On November 1, Darci Lynne shared the video of her singing “Popular” with her mouth shut across her social media. The impressive video earned over 400 thousand views on YouTube, 300 thousand views on TikTok. On Facebook, the ventriloquist captioned the post “All this Wicked movie promo is bringing out the theater kid in me.”

For those who may not be familiar with the song, “Popular” is from the Broadway Musical Wicked. The musical originated on Broadway with Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda and Idina Menzel as Elphaba. This song is Chenoweth’s character teaching Menzel’s character how to become “Popular” in their school, Shiz University.

This song includes opera elements and is considered extremely hard to nail. Darci Lynne’s cover incorporates everything that Chenoweth’s Glinda is about, down to her signature laugh. This cover is extremely impressive considering Darci never actually opens her mouth.
