Matthew McConaughey is a very capable actor who can deliver a stunningly dramatic performance in a film.

It would be reasonable to assume that he frequently interacts with writers, filmmakers, and producers at Hollywood bars and parties, but this is not the case.

The actor opted to relocate from Malibu, California, to Texas in 2014, although the majority of the film industry’s work takes place on the West Coast in Hollywood.

During an appearance on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna, the actor discussed what motivated his choice to relocate.

McConaughey said, “This has always been home, and there are many reasons for that,” during the recording of the October 24 episode on location in Austin, Texas.

“This is where I have a great relationship with time—meaning that 60 seconds feel like a minute, and a mile feels like a mile.”

It appears that the concept of a ‘Hollywood minute’ is less intriguing to the actor at this time in his life.

The actor, who was born in Uvalde and reared in Longview, said he chose to return to Texas because of his family, particularly his children.

His 92-year-old mother and brothers reside in Houston and Midland.

McConaughey went on to say, “Our family unit is here, and we have resources and a backbone of security here.”

He went on to say that he had always planned to return to the state as he and his Brazilian model wife, Camila Alves, raised their family. The couple has three children together: Levi (15), Vida (14), and Livingston (11).

The couple married in their Austin home in 2012 and chose to return there from California two years later.

McConaughey appreciated Austin’s friendly character, describing it as a “very creative city in a very structured state.”

He continued: “I wanted them to enjoy what I grew up with.

“There is a significant amount of common sense that permeates it, which is not explicitly stated but understood here.”

“The rule in Austin is ‘Be’You’—that’s always been the rule in this city—and we should make sure that that remains the rule—just ‘Be You.’”
